The still illusive island

Some time ago - quite some time actually - when it was still warm we went on an adventure to try and walk to an island we could see in the distance.  The tides are such here that it goes out for miles and on this particular adventure we got rather bogged in mud and never made it!!

Well yesterday seemed like a good day to try again from a slightly different angle and so this is where we got to...

found a few treasures along the way

this is all that is between us and the island after 2hrs walking

Next time maybe we will take togs and swim the last wee bit

the view back towards out starting point - you can just see the silo at Sugar Australia on the right

Yep its a long way back

squiggly footprints between the 2 stretches of water

It was soooo good despite the fact that i couldnt move for a while afterwards, needing to let it digest and settle a little but gee was it yummy

Maurice and his music

Maurice is a great musician and many pleasant hours have been spent relaxing, chatting and listening to music.  He has been travelling backwards and forwards to Australia for the last 30 years.

Maurice - the man from Tokoroa

Tour of Sugar Australia

We had a short tour of the sugar factory by Derek.

The deceiving silo was not what it seemed, we had both believed it was full of sugar but it was in fact a maze of pipes, tanks, conveyors and everything else associated with receiving and delivering sugar to the packing machines and the ship.

From the silo we walked through a conveyor pipe to a distribution shed and from there followed the bottom pipe (which you cant see in the photo) through to the wharf.  We didnt have time to venture up the top pipe you can see in the picture to the top of the silo.

We followed the bottom pipe to this distribution point and then continued through the pipe on the left which led to the wharf.  The pipe to the right is the one which leads to the top of the silo - a walk for another day so we have been promised

The walk to the wharf inside the conveyor pipe to the ship distribution building and saw the workings inside there - awesome.  descended an external staircase back down to the wharf - and then to work - DAMM

Only in Australia

Some time ago Tony was lucky enough to spot these 'fitting' jandals on the beach - beleiving they were very special as they were unusual we watched them for a while and as darkness fell and no one had claimed them we decided they needed a new home with us.

We didnt know what was special about them but Tony found them very comfortable.  A couple of months done the track he spotted somebody wearing similar jandals and questioned the importance of the metal piece underneath.  He informed us the metal piece underneath the jandals were in fact bottle openers and expensive ($70).

White knights to the rescue

Well we were all there - Maurice, Dennis and us - well almost, Dennis got his car stuck in the mud so it was fortunate that being like minded people we had all gravitated towards Queens park to recharge laptops, phones, fridges and anything else that needs power.  So off Maurice and Tony headed - white knights to the rescue.  It soon appeared that it was a bit more than a push was required so the boy scouts foraged around to find some roughage to put under the tyres and then had another go at pushing - success!!
